MUNGO

From Two Old Looms to a Mill of Their Ownx

The story of Mungo began in 1998 with two restored antique looms. Master weaver Stuart Holding used them to produce small batches of textiles in an old barn. He called it his “working weaving museum”, welcoming passers-by to step inside and see the weaving process for themselves. Interest grew, eventually leading to the establishment of Mungo Mill in Plettenberg Bay, where a team of more than a hundred people now works.

Since 2017, Mungo Mill has been based at Old Nick Village. It’s a remarkable place where visitors can follow the entire process, from designing and preparing the yarns to weaving, finishing and packaging the textiles. Antique looms from different eras stand alongside more modern machinery. The two original looms that started it all are still in use today.

Textiles Made to Last

At Mungo, it’s all about quality materials, careful weaving and products designed to stand the test of time. Designs are developed in-house, and new fabrics are often woven as samples first. Only when a design and fabric prove themselves in everyday use does it go into production. Many designs draw inspiration from historic weaving books and traditional techniques, reinterpreted in Mungo’s own distinctive way.

The people behind the looms matter just as much. Many weavers have trained within the company, progressing from apprentices to skilled machine operators. Mungo sees creating jobs and developing skills within the local community as an important part of its business.

This connection between people, place and craftsmanship lies at the heart of Mungo and gives each piece its own character.

"We believe that good quality with a conscience never goes out of fashion."
